Week 4 Blog Assignment: Magic School

AI is used more often in education, although it is still mostly new to me. I used Magic School AI to create a lesson plan for first graders to begin researching topics. I am always looking for ways to make education engaging and effective. Students learn more when they see the importance of what they are learning.

PART ONE:

I found that the quality of the lesson was high and met the standards that I provided. In the state of Oklahoma, we use the OAS standards. The OAS standards that I provided were 1.6.W.1 Students will generate questions about topics of interest for research and 1.6.W.2 Students will organize information found during group or individual research, using graphic organizers or other aids with prompting. I also provided the ISTE standard for students, 1.1.c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. The lesson aligned with the standards by providing a lesson that goes along with the standards for research. The lesson was sufficiently rigorous in providing an engaging that lesson that encouraged students to collaborate and practice reliable research, also providing extension activities to further the lesson. The assessment aligned with the objective by requiring students to present their findings to the class by demonstrating their understanding and ability to communicate the information clearly. The only improvement I would suggest is providing ways for modification, other than for early finishers. As discussed, and based off the information I provided as examples, I do find the tool useful for the creation of rigorous lesson plans based on my experience.

The lesson plan I created can be found at this link https://app.magicschool.ai/tools/lesson-plan-generator?share=3d19d096-1eff-4a4b-8600-8fc56e5b8bd6

PART TWO:

For part two I chose the Magic School AI tool Decodable Text. The tool is used to create a decodable text based on the Science of Reading for early literacy. I found that the tool was useful, especially if you were in a time crunch and needed a tool for a specific skill. I would use this tool with my students in small groups to practice skills related to specific skills.

PART THREE:

My thoughts about Magic School were that it has the potential to save a lot of time in planning classroom activities. Based on my experience with Magic School for this assignment, this is a tool that I would use the tools with my students. I would share this tool with colleagues because I feel that more and more we are looking for ways to manage our time in effective ways. I feel that this could provide us with materials to enhance certain skills. The only concern I have is that the lessons did not offer modifications for all students. I feel that if I learned to provide more detail that might be addressed for future lessons. I feel that the benefits of Magic School are meeting specific skill needs that might always be addressed. In the classroom, as a teacher, I have not used AI, as I often have had concerns about reliability. This tool has convinced me to try it as a supplemental tool in my classroom. The students use AI for reading assistance through an AI tool, Amira through the HMH curriculum. We use this tool for assessments and fluency practice. I feel that AI can provide value to our classroom and students.

Comments

  1. I had never heard of this tool before using it for this class and I think that it is a really good baseline for building a strong rigorous lesson. I agree that it needs to provide or have the ability to add in modifications to meet the needs of some students. In the lesson that I created, it was requiring students to create an app. I think that this lesson is very challenging and would be great for a class that is high or a higher grade level. My problem with the lesson is that my second graders would not be able to complete this assignment even with guidance. They would struggle following step-by-step directions with us doing the whole project together. I agree with you that I think this app has great potential and could save a lot of time.
