Week One Blog
Hello,
My name is Erica Shippey. I'm a wife,
mom, Christian, and first-grade teacher. I have two kids. I enjoy reading. I
have a bachelor’s degree in educational studies. I am currently in my last
semester of the graduate program at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and
will be graduating in December. I just started my third year of teaching First
Grade. My future professional goals are to continue teaching as well as be an
instructional coach.
Computer Science is a new group of
standards that I have taken a recent interest in as I will be teaching them in
my classroom this year. While we have always had technology in my classroom, I
am excited to add new aspects such as coding and programming. I am excited
to work with my students as a team to collaborate on ways to build robots and
use graphic visualizations.
Empowered
Learner indicator 1a states articulate and set learning goals, develop
strategies leveraging technology to achieve them, and reflect on the learning
process itself to improve learning outcomes. Students in my first-grade classroom
will address the ISTE standard as well as state standards by using programs
such as GetEpic, Amira, and 99math to develop their learning goals for each
month. Students will use the programs to track and monitor their progress
throughout the month. Students can work together to help each other reach their
goals through collaborative efforts. Each month students will use the programs
to print their visual graphs of progress to monitor their own progress
throughout the school year.
Using
the Triple E Framework, I would use the lesson to first engage with students by
modeling navigation of the software. I would demonstrate how we will create the
goals as well as monitor the progress using the program. I would encourage
students to work together to create goals that can be achieved during the set
time. To enhance the lesson, I would encourage students to be active listeners,
ask questions, and print their progress to collect in a data folder. I will
work with students to ensure that they have developed a clear understanding of
the content, specifically the vocabulary. Lastly, I would extend the lesson by
encouraging students to track their own personal goals in their everyday life
through other software such as read-a-thons or software that can track their exercise.
I would use the technology to demonstrate that we can extend the knowledge of
what was learned outside of the classroom.

Erica, as a teacher who also teaches young students, I think you had some great ideas. I love the idea of students tracking their own progress and seeing themselves if they are getting better at what they do. I think it is so beneficial for them, instead of scores. Some students do not know what grades even mean and understand better if they are going up or down in what they are doing. I am currently having make personal goals, I am just having problems with them finding ways to track their goals. I try to track their goals, but I would love for them to track their own, just like you stated.
